Our mental health can be effected due to dopamine and serotonin imbalance which if not addressed, can lead to problems.
Dopamine and serotonin imbalance and the effects on our mental health
In life sometimes, why do we either put all our effort into something, and become totally obsessed and addicted.
We exercise, take drugs or eat food in excess for example, or one the other hand, just can’t be bothered with anything.
In life this seems to be a total imbalance that needs to be addressed to find the middle ground.
So what’s causes this problem, well it stems from mainly two neurotransmitters, dopamine and serotonin.
These communicate information throughout our body and brain, which can effect our moods, sleep, weight, concentration.
Dopamine, which keeps you focused, and is responsible for our desire for something, for example, food, exercise or caffeine.
The problems arrive when you get too much dopamine from a negative source, this can cause addiction.
It is far more beneficial to get your dopamine from more natural sources.
Secondly there is serotonin, which is responsible for our wellbeing or mental health.
This allows us to be content and happy in life. It helps control our sleep, moods, anxiety levels, and relieves depression.
The dopamine and serotonin imbalance needs to level out to improve our mental health.
How dopamine and serotonin imbalance effects our health
If you have too much dopamine, you tend to lack serotonin, and vice versa, too little dopamine then you tend to have too much serotonin.
You may also have low serotonin levels and low dopamine, and again, if you have any of these imbalances, there can be problems with your wellbeing.
If you have too much dopamine, and low levels of serotonin, we are not normally happy, or content.
Instead of being proud of ourselves, we tend to try and escape by being actively chasing a dream or a goal, but never really get there.
This is because when we reach the goal, it is moved, as it didn’t make us happy when we got there in the first place.
For example, you say to yourself, “if a become a team leader at work it will make me happy.
So you become a team leader, but it doesn’t make you happy like you thought.
So now you say to yourself, “if I become a manager now, that will make me happy”.
But yet again when you reach that goal, you are not happy or content, the goal just keeps moving.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is caused by high levels of dopamine and low levels of serotonin, you are after perfectionism, but you will never reach it.
Too much serotonin and not enough dopamine, makes us lack the ability to focus or to organise, we lack motivation, and never seem to get things done.
Other signs of low levels of dopamine include apathy, low energy, low libido and also find it had to experience pleasure.
Whereas if you have low levels of serotonin it will manifest itself as an anxiety ridden form of depression.
When you are low in both serotonin and dopamine, this is where you will lack any motivation to be happy to will become depressed, and cravings will set in.
Ways to improve your dopamine and serotonin imbalance
If you have high levels of dopamine and low levels of serotonin.
Change your diet, get more morning sun, exercise, or take the following supplements, 5-htp, L-tryptophan, or St. Johns Wort.
If you have low levels of dopamine and high levels of serotonin.
Change you diet, but also drink a little coffee, exercise and take the following supplements, L-tyrosine and/or DLPA
When you are low in both of the neurotransmitters.
Exercise but moderately, good diet, sleep, rest and do not take any drugs.
